WE’RE STILL SPORT LUXING

July 14, 2015

Is it me or is everything just happening too fast? The fact that we have passed the halfway mark of the year. Me, getting older, turning a quarter of a century in just a few months. Me, finally getting more out of my comfort zone and steering my career in the direction I want it to go in. everything is just happening too fast around me, someday I am happy, coz it means it’s a step closer to graduation day and my many ambitions but some days I get so overwhelmed and just want to drop all tools down and just recline in my couch and stuff my face with speckled eggs from Woolworths, and then you get people who call you up to style a shoot and you realise that work needs to be done, time waits for no man.

STYLIST SIKI x CAPE ARGUS LIFE SUPPLEMENT

February 18, 2015
I’m so overwhelmed by the state of politics in my country and I haven’t given myself enough time to follow all of it but with the little that I know it’s one interesting turn of events. For some odd reason I watch the news reports about parliament and all I’m thinking to myself is, “I wish I was Mmusi Maimane’s personal stylist and wardrobe planner.” He doesn’t need much work to be done to his style but he could do with a bit of assistance from me. The man sure knows how to dress and is very eloquent, that’s just another way of saying I’m crushing hard on the bloke. *giggles*
Onto some more important news, after running around sourcing some pretty merchandise from Puma and Adidas, look mom I made it on Cape Argus Life Supplement front page. I’m still so stunned and asking myself, “How did it all happen?” I remember, I called myself a Stylist way before I even did Styling work, People believed in me and my work, People risked with me.
Dragging a suitcase around Cape Town CBD or carrying an extra big bag with fashion shoot clothes in them, having people thinking I slept over at a man’s house overnight, has ALL been worth it. I’m still letting it all sink in. One thing you should know about me, these things humble me more than anything (God is at work). These things make me realise that good things are ahead for me. I have so many dreams but I’m just this one body. I’ve met some amazing people along the way and I remember each and everyone’s face that got me where I am today. It was just the other day I bumped into Noni Gasa outside Woolworths head office and she said some wise words to me which I hold so close to my heart. I now make it a point to play it forward by saying something genuine and special to someone.

Forget your circumstances, Follow your dreams. God will take care of you.

STYLIST SIKI ON HECTIC NINE 9

February 16, 2015
I’ve come to the conclusion that I can not juggle it all. I am just this one busy body that wants to be many things while still trying to find the balance and during my attempt in trying to juggle it all, I tend to fail at some things. I don’t know if you ever feel like that, even when you try to eliminate unnecessary activities you just find that there could never be enough hours in a day to do all the things you love.

I came to this realisation last week, I felt burnt out (already in February). Which is a feeling I honestly hate, people tend to associate being busy with being productive and I’ve often said this way too many times, It’s all a lie. Being busy does not equate to being productive. It’s been a gruelling two weeks of February while trying to maintain my freelance styling work, doing odd jobs for clients, creating blog content and school work. I found that a lot fell through the cracks and I was left so depleted at the end of each week longing for Sabbath rest.

STYLIST SIKI x CHAPEL GOODS

September 19, 2014
I always laugh at the fact that, before I did any styling work I called myself a Stylist first. I guess I faked it till I made it.
This was one of those independent shoots I did for Caleb, the designer of Chapel goods, The ambitious girl in me, I recall walking into Caleb’s studio at Woodstock Exchange and pitching the lookbook idea and he was impressed and allowed me to run with it by doing some styling for his product shoot. What was supposed to be a lookbook turned out to be a style shoot for his online store. After numerous emails of communication while trying to hold down a 9 to 5 job on my side, we planned a shoot which was successful ( and I resigned from my job immediately). I was impressed by the outcome, only because the clothes do not overpower the bags, everything works in synergy if I could say so myself, all thanks to the photographer Keziah Suskin and for Jenna (Caleb’s assistant) for running with everything. My last minute models were superb and did a truly great job, I remember calling Lucy on the last minute asking her to be one of my models. If you are not in the production / fashion industry, you will not know the stress induced pain that comes with organising a low-budget fashion shoot. That stuff ain’t cool, but the final outcome makes you feel like all the hard-work was worth it.

STYLIST SIKI PART 2 & THE END OF THE RANT

May 23, 2014
It’s often quotes such as, “You have as many hours in a day as Beyonce.” Or “Your dreams are valid ”, that wake me up in the morning wanting to chase my dreams. Forget the obstacles and lack of resources that get in the way but when the dream is there nothing can stop me from aspiring to be great.

STYLIST SIKI

April 1, 2014

Sad to share my sentiments but I do feel someone in the fashion industry needs to read this. The fashion industry is missing out on real talent, especially the magazine fashion departments. Look I am not out here to bash at anyone specific but I am here to share what has been a common topic of discussion over lunch dates with young aspiring fashion editors.
